Cancun/ Isla Mujeres, Mexico

November 2020, COVID travel

Kaje and I were married in September of 2020 and despite a well planned honeymoon, our trip to Bali was cancelled. So in November 2020 we traveled to Cancun for our luna de miel. We spent an amazing 11 days at the Dreams Natura resort, we got to know the staff as friends and we got really familiar with the cocktails.

Dreams is an all-inclusive resort and I know Drake says “Private villas only, I don’t go near a resort” but he’s wrong! While the hotel needed to delay their opening by a few weeks to work out some kinks, the perks were great. We had the honeymoon package so upon arrival we were gifted with welcome champagne. After taking our COVID test we were escorted to our suite with the most adorable sign on the door, a bottle of champagne, a bottle of tequila, 6 chocolate covered strawberries, and a fully stocked complimentary fridge. During our stay, with the exception of the Tequila and Champagne everything was restocked everyday.

COVID did impact some things such as the restaurants being open. They were on a rotating schedule of 3 restaurants a night to which you had to make a reservation. The clubs were closed and the bars closed at midnight, but they still had live music and dancing. If I said anyone really other than my husband and I social distanced and wore a mask besides staff, I’d be lying.

Anywho, on to the drinks! Champagne is extremely sweet in Mexico but I have found this to be true in a lot of Caribbean countries. We drank our weight in tequila, mini beers, Miami vices, and white wine. By the end I couldn’t stomach anything other than mezcal mojitos or mezcal straight. We had two of the best margaritas on Isla Mujeres, an excursion I definitely recommend to everyone if nothing but to eat the street food and take in the view of crystal clear waters.

I wouldn’t encourage anyone to buy liquor close to the tourist spots like Chichen Itza and if you do buy tequila places like Isla Mujeres make sure what they’re pouring you to taste matches what they’re selling you.
